Don't be afraid of the old MAID

MAID as a technology has been around for an eternity but MAID, or massive array of idle disks, certainly isn’t dead. MAID technology has now found its way into standard disk products from Nexsan. It looks like MAID is taking its appropriate place as a technology option in a disk array solution and not the primary reason to buy it, which brings us to VARs.

MAID as a technology has improved — some are calling today’s version “MAID 2.0.” New versions offer multiple levels of MAID instead of just the drives being turned off. These more granular spin-down modes have corresponding degrees of power savings and access times, making them appropriate for more data sets. Some systems also change the MAID level automatically, based upon access history of the RAID group.

Whatever the case, MAID is here to stay. With this improved functionality and its status as a technology option for disk systems.

NavigateStorage specializes in Storage, Email Arching, Backup and Kaspersky AV. Nexsan is a proven storage with MAID 2.0. Whatever your needs might be contact Jim at 978-318-9000

Mimosa Systems - EMail Archiving with full Compliance

Mimosa NearPoint for Microsoft Exchange for EMail Archiving, including eDiscovery from NavigateStorage (in their 10th year) has incorporated an innovative data capture approach called Continuous Application Shadowing™ where Exchange log files are captured the instant they are committed to disk and stores them “off-host” on NearPoint. Mimosa, an on-site solution, is easy to manage with high reliability. We also have two hosted solutions that saves you the costs of all hardware - servers, storage and personnel and fully manages this solution for you on their systems with full disaster recovery. These are Global Relay and Red Condor totally secure and with full compliance and eDiscovery.

Continuous Application Shadowing is an application-intelligent process that blocks corruption from the backup copy. All email content extracted from the log files is indexed and stored with single-instance storage. Continuous Application Shadowing also captures the complete Exchange mailbox information, including contacts, calendars, personal folders, as well as email stored offline in PST files and all email content found in public folders — a major advantage for eDiscovery

StoneFly's iSCSI.com : Products : Voyager IP SAN

Navigatestorage premiers Stonefly's Voyager IP SAN:

In direct competition with Equallogic the Voyager IP SANs are designed to offer active/active controllers, improved redundancy, high-availability and fast performance - at a lower price point. Using high-performance storage interconnects, the Voyager product family is designed for enterprise environments looking for a versatile SAN for primary and secondary storage applications.

With support for SAS, SATA, and SSD drives for online transaction processing, database, email, disk based archives, disk to disk backup, virtual servers and other core applications. The cornerstone of the Voyager is their storage virtualization engine, which offers quad-core processing power, dedicated iSCSI Cache, and our StoneFusion storage management operating system.

Don't believe us, read what Reuters had to say in March of 2009. And at 10Gb speeds the Voyager is a screamer.

Speaking of 10GB you should let us tell you about H3C a division of 3COM. Combining the Voyager and H3C's 10GB switches gives you a very economical, performing and secure solution.

The Voyager not only supports 10GB but also Solid State drives as well.

Allow us to arrange an informative conference call to tell you more.

Atempo - Data Management, Simplified. - Press Release:

"Atempo Delivers Block-level Deduplication to Time Navigator with Atempo HyperStream Server
New Module Maximizes the Efficiency of Storage Systems and Reduces Bandwidth Use for Remote Office Data Protection

Palo Alto, Calif., 6/15/2009 - Atempo, Inc., a leading provider of cross-platform data protection and archiving solutions, today introduced Atempo HyperStream Server, a new module for Atempo Time Navigator that delivers block-level deduplication capabilities to the company’s flagship high-performance backup and recovery solution. This key new feature is optimized for midsize and large organizations seeking to cost-effectively maximize the utilization of their storage systems, as well as for companies that require powerful and efficient enterprise-class data protection for their remote or branch offices where block-level incremental backup is preferred due to network bandwidth limitations.

Atempo HyperStream Server is a stream-oriented storage service that allows backup data to be sent to a storage server across high and low bandwidth connections, while performing block-level deduplication across and within the streams. The new module effectively eliminates redundancy in storage media by identifying identical blocks of data on multiple systems and only backing up the changed blocks, significantly reducing both the amount of storage and the network bandwidth required. In addition, Atempo HyperStream Server supports extremely efficient block-level replication from one unit to another over local- or wide- area network connections, which combines the advantages of fast local restore and disaster recoverability for both data center and remote office backup."

Protecting your data

Here is yet another example of what can happen if you neglect to backup your data. For all you T-Mobile users out there, you probably know that the Sidekick stores all of your critical data in a network datastore and not within the physical device. If something were to happen to any of those servers holding your data, you would lose your data. Scary thought, huh? Well, that is exactly what happened.

Michael Sheehan believes that during hardware upgrades, there was a failure that occurred. Since the upgrade of the SAN proceeded without data backup the result was thousands of Sidekick users stuck without their data. Here are five tips he presents in his blog post, that are critical for any IT department to remember:

Backups – Back up often. Set up automatic as well as manual backup procedures. Store your data locally AND somewhere completely geographically distinct from your infrastructure. *Check out the SAN backup features on the StoneFusion OS.

Redundancy – Physical servers AND virtualized servers do encounter issues. You would never put all of your eggs in one basket so why do it with your infrastructure! You should ensure that you set up a “high availability” (HA) infrastructure where you have 2 (or more) of everything, whether they be all active or as hot or warm standbys. *Check out the fully redundant, HA Voyager IP SAN.

Failovers – Most people, unless they are hugely successful, decide to put off setting up a Disaster Recovery (DR) environment due to costs and the time it takes to do so. That is, until their primary site goes down for hours or days, then DR suddenly moves to the top of the list. *Learn about StoneFly’s Data Continuity.

No Single Point Of Failure Protection Without Complete Duplication Of Storage Resources

Today’s crop of storage devices have gone a long way to protect data by using different RAID levels. To date, all No Single Point Of Failure (NSPOF) configurations require 100% duplication of actual disk storage. RAID10, and RAID51 or RAID61 require doubling the number of drives to achieve NSPOF, and most manufacturers don’t support RAID51 or RAID61.

Problem – if other applications do not require the same level of protection, the only option is to buy more storage and protect it. Some vendors do not even offer this as an option. NavigateStorage and Stonefly bring you a soluition. This brief will review standard NSPOF options vs. StoneFly’s RAIDML, which offers the ability to create NSPOF volumes and purely RAID5 or 6 protected volumes, in a single storage unit or across multiple storage units.

NavigateStorage is pleased to bring you a solution with our Stonefly products. Let us tell you more. Call 1-978-318-9000 or write.

Red Condor Launches Cloud-Based Message Archiving Solution

October 21, 2009

NavigateStorage a Red Condor business partner and long term Email Archiving expert joins Red Condor in leveraging its global cloud computer and storage infrastructure, email security services provider is launching Red Condor Archive, a secure message archiving service, which helps organizations meet compliance regulations, e-discovery support requirements, and data storage and management best practices.

According to its Thursday announcement, Red Condor Archive delivers a scalable, software-free service that provides automatic back-up of all inbound and outbound messages for all messaging systems with lifetime retention and unlimited storage. It is managed through a web-based interface, and is available on a subscription basis.

Like its hosted spam-fighting service, Red Condor Archive does not require any additional hardware or software, or ongoing maintenance. All access to archived data is protected by SSL encryption and adherence to the US government's Advanced Encryption Standard ensures that data is not accessible in clear text.

"While our award-winning spam-fighting technology continues to protect email servers and networks from email threats, these same infrastructures are facing a growing storage problem that is straining expensive hardware and adding significant administrative costs," Red Condor chief executive officer Thomas Steding said in a statement. "In addition to these storage challenges, companies are also being hit with compliance requirements from the SEC, NASD, HIPAA, Sarbanes-Oxley, and other industry groups, as well as the need to protect themselves in the event of legal discovery requests."

Data is stored online and immediately accessible for comprehensive searches through secure administrator and end-user dashboards. Archive users will be able to search, retrieve and export messages by keyword, sender, recipient, data range and other criteria, as well as add comments, tag keywords and flag for review. With Red Condor Archive, companies can enforce corporate policy while protecting themselves and their employees by auditing employee email for harassment, improper disclosure, confidentiality leaks and other risks.

"Message archiving is no longer something nice to have, it is now business critical," Steding continued. "With Red Condor Archive, we are bringing to message archiving the same dedication that helped make our email filtering so effective and successful. Red Condor provides an affordable solution that protects and archives business communications, allowing organizations and their IT staffs to remain focused on their core operations."

Jim Addlesberger, President of NavigateStorage, said that Red Condor is taking all the work and costs out of protecting email and of being compliant. Jim said "a user can start out with as few as five mail boxes and grow up to 5,000 mail boxes. Costs he said for 100 mail boxes is $4000 a year. No software or hardware is required."

Our webpage for this great offering is under development so email or call 978-318-9000 for brochure pdf's or more info, or both.

Thin provisioning brings utilization and capacity benefits to data storage, but with a caveat

NavigateStorage specializes in storage and has since 1999. We found this article of interest and wanted to share it with you from Search Storage October, 2009.

Introducing thin provisioning technology into existing and new enterprise data storage environments can bring dramatic storage recovery rates and bottom-line savings. The technology works in disparate environments with a wide range of capacity and application needs, and can help many administrators solve the ongoing dilemma of provisioning enough storage to each application so it can run smoothly while still retaining enough storage to introduce new applications and deal with unexpected growth. Major vendors have been slow to offer thin provisioning technology, however, perhaps because they were reluctant to reduce the amount of capacity (and products) their customers must buy.

NavigateStorage and Adaptec this week stormed into the burgeoning solid state drive (SSD) space with the introduction of an I/O controller that speeds performance by as much 5x over traditional controller implementations.

The MaxIQ SSD Performance Cache is a PCI-e based controller that uses as many as four Intel X25-E 32GB single-level cell SSDs to offer 20,000 IOPs and 1.2GBps throughput. When used in a server and in the data path between server and storage the MaxIQ will speed performance for database applications, front end Web servers and virtual environments.
As data comes from applications, it is cached on the MaxIQ so that it can be retrieved quickly.
The MaxIQ features 3Gbps Serial Attached SCSI and Serial ATA support and works in Windows and Linux environments.

MaxIQ consists of Intel SSDs and software that can be paired with any Adaptec 5xxx or 2xxx controller. In a configuration with a MaxIQ Intel SSD and 12 Seagate 15,000RPM Serial Attached SCSI drives, testing of random reads showed 11x the performance of a traditionally configured Series 5xxx controller. In the same configuration, testing showed 5x performance increases for Web server workloads and 4x performance for both file server and online transaction processing.

The adapters will compete with Fusion-io's ioDrive. In a comparison, Adaptec claims that its controller costs $.31/GB and $0.14/IO compared to Fusion-io's cost of $15/GB and $0.15 per IO.

The MaxIQ Intel SSD is expected to be available mid-September starting at $1,300.

How StoneFly’s StoneFusion-Powered IP SANs Leverage Windows Volume Shadow Copy Services for Easy Snapshot Management

NavigateStorage's "StoneFly’s" fully featured IP SANs powered by the StoneFusion Operating System provide centralized storage management, advanced storage services and integration with Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Services (VSS) to simplify storage provisioning. To enhance data availability and host integration, StoneFly utilizes the core technologies of the Microsoft Windows operating system to interact with IP SAN volumes.

StoneFly IP SANs have offered integrated snapshot technology since StoneFusion version 3, when StoneFly Snapshot was used to implement nearline data recovery and improve system backups. StoneFly Snapshot is designed for recovering critical data quickly with point-in-time images of a live volume, which can be created nearly instantaneously. Snapshot volumes appear as regular read/write volumes to the host, and modifications do not impact the live volume. Unlike full volume copies, snapshots occupy a small fraction of available space. StoneFly

Snapshot technology reinforces the focus on data recovery by offering rollbacks to previous valid data in the event of a disk failure, volume indexing, file deletion or virus.
Microsoft enhanced its operating system-wide snapshots with a new technology called Volume Shadow Copy Services (VSS), which offers improved support for snapshots across NAS and SAN volumes in the Windows Server 2003 operating system. StoneFusion-based IP SANs utilize VSS to ensure continuous volume access for Windows-based workstations or servers for snapshots, online backups or other applications.

Initially the only VSS-aware applications were file systems, local volumes, Exchange and SQL. The increased demand for networked storage including IP SANs required this technology to evolve so that snapshots could be supported across the network instead of being limited to the host. As a result of the rapid increase of iSCSI across Windows Server platforms, StoneFly continued to develop its IP SAN offerings to provide more host-level integration and to ensure continuous disk access for mission-critical applications including email, databases and disaster recovery, eliminating the potential for data corruption. The StoneFly VSS agent provides a single snapshot mechanism for the IP SAN and Windows Server environment.

StoneFly IP SAN Options
StoneFly offers a wide variety of IP SANs for Windows environments, ranging from entry-level IP SANs-In-a-Box to modular high-availability, high capacity IP SANs. StoneFusion-powered storage can be easily deployed in environments requiring tiered storage, high availability or scalability.

How Microsoft VSS Works
Microsoft developed the VSS technology to provide snapshot capability (back-ups executed without closing down application I/O) to support VSS-aware applications and back-up software. The VSS utility uses a framework approach, communicating with the application server, a writer, a back-up application and the storage device.

Easy on your budget ideas from NavigateStorage

Our customers and prospects all have one thing in common, "they don't have much budget $$$ "

But they do have needs such as Storage, Email archiving and Protection (virus, malware, data leakage.) And the less requested but often more critical - backup.

When we encounter such needs we first work hard to understand their challenges BOTH LONG AND SHORT. This often comes down to compromising. Its interesting how often the technical side is often blinded by features and bells and whistles. Oh for sure we can sell all that but work hard to meet the NEEDS and BUDGET and not let the user be blinded by the gadgets.

So if you are contemplating storage expansion, talk to us before before you decide. We sell most all vendors and can help you find the perfect solution.

IP SANs support SSD

Sep. 2, 2009 – StoneFly, Inc., a leading supplier of integrated IP storage area network (SAN) systems, today announced support for Intel® X25E-Extreme SATA Solid-State Drives (SSD) across its virtualized IP SAN product lines to enable customers to improve performance, capacity and lower energy consumption.

Based on StoneFly testing with 10 gigabit Ethernet (GbE), Intel SSD shattered previous 15,000RPM Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) and Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) performance results. The new offerings, based on the Intel X25-E SSD, improve SAN input/output (IO) by 400 percent, while lowering energy consumption and cooling requirements by 80 percent. With no spinning disks, solid-state drives are able to read/write data faster, and consume less energy than SAS and SATA drives.

"With the ability to mix SSD and HDD in a single chassis, organizations can manage and utilize their storage more effectively by appropriating specific applications with the appropriate storage tier," said Bahman Jalali, director of product management for StoneFly. "With this hybrid approach, StoneFly IP SANs enable system administrators to achieve ultra-fast performance by utilizing energy-saving solid state drives for data intensive applications, while moving non-mission critical data to SATA or SAS drives."

"With the trends toward virtualization and 10 gigabit and IP SAN adoption, SSD will undeniably contribute to a paradigm shift in enterprise storage," said Kyle Fukuda, enterprise product line manager, Intel NAND Solutions Group. "A storage model which includes SSD can increase performance and reduces energy costs for lower overall total cost of ownership."

Support for Intel SSD is available for StoneFly’s Voyager, OptiSAN, and ISC S-Class product lines, with the highest performing StoneFly IP SAN appliance supporting up to 8TB of SSD storage capacity. The Voyager supports up to four bonded 10GbE StoneFly Satisfies Need for Speed with SSD ports, for an aggregated bandwidth of 40Gb, allowing organizations to sustain high-speed performance and SAN IO throughput.
