Protecting your data

Here is yet another example of what can happen if you neglect to backup your data. For all you T-Mobile users out there, you probably know that the Sidekick stores all of your critical data in a network datastore and not within the physical device. If something were to happen to any of those servers holding your data, you would lose your data. Scary thought, huh? Well, that is exactly what happened.

Michael Sheehan believes that during hardware upgrades, there was a failure that occurred. Since the upgrade of the SAN proceeded without data backup the result was thousands of Sidekick users stuck without their data. Here are five tips he presents in his blog post, that are critical for any IT department to remember:

Backups – Back up often. Set up automatic as well as manual backup procedures. Store your data locally AND somewhere completely geographically distinct from your infrastructure. *Check out the SAN backup features on the StoneFusion OS.

Redundancy – Physical servers AND virtualized servers do encounter issues. You would never put all of your eggs in one basket so why do it with your infrastructure! You should ensure that you set up a “high availability” (HA) infrastructure where you have 2 (or more) of everything, whether they be all active or as hot or warm standbys. *Check out the fully redundant, HA Voyager IP SAN.

Failovers – Most people, unless they are hugely successful, decide to put off setting up a Disaster Recovery (DR) environment due to costs and the time it takes to do so. That is, until their primary site goes down for hours or days, then DR suddenly moves to the top of the list. *Learn about StoneFly’s Data Continuity.

No Single Point Of Failure Protection Without Complete Duplication Of Storage Resources

Today’s crop of storage devices have gone a long way to protect data by using different RAID levels. To date, all No Single Point Of Failure (NSPOF) configurations require 100% duplication of actual disk storage. RAID10, and RAID51 or RAID61 require doubling the number of drives to achieve NSPOF, and most manufacturers don’t support RAID51 or RAID61.

Problem – if other applications do not require the same level of protection, the only option is to buy more storage and protect it. Some vendors do not even offer this as an option. NavigateStorage and Stonefly bring you a soluition. This brief will review standard NSPOF options vs. StoneFly’s RAIDML, which offers the ability to create NSPOF volumes and purely RAID5 or 6 protected volumes, in a single storage unit or across multiple storage units.

NavigateStorage is pleased to bring you a solution with our Stonefly products. Let us tell you more. Call 1-978-318-9000 or write.

RELDATA --- NAS and iSCSI storage systems.

NavigateStorage, a 10 year old storage speciality company, highlights RELDATA a unified storage system. RELDATA develops feature-rich, software-centric unified storage systems that cost-effectively simplify management and improve utilization of storage infrastructures in virtualized, private-cloud computing environments. Value-based advanced features of RELDATA unified storage solutions include:

* Virtualize SAN (iSCSI, FC) block-level and NAS (both NFS and CIFS) file-level data with management from a single pane of glass
* Use of iSCSI for synchronous mirroring and incremental replication, which offers greater flexibility and lower cost than legacy fibre channel.
* Virtualization of third-party storage into a single pool managed via a single interface.
* File data can be replicated using traditional block-level methods.
* Snapshot roll-back flexibility saves time by allowing IT staff to roll back volumes to an arbitrary snapshot on a block-level.

Red Condor Launches Cloud-Based Message Archiving Solution

October 21, 2009

NavigateStorage a Red Condor business partner and long term Email Archiving expert joins Red Condor in leveraging its global cloud computer and storage infrastructure, email security services provider is launching Red Condor Archive, a secure message archiving service, which helps organizations meet compliance regulations, e-discovery support requirements, and data storage and management best practices.

According to its Thursday announcement, Red Condor Archive delivers a scalable, software-free service that provides automatic back-up of all inbound and outbound messages for all messaging systems with lifetime retention and unlimited storage. It is managed through a web-based interface, and is available on a subscription basis.

Like its hosted spam-fighting service, Red Condor Archive does not require any additional hardware or software, or ongoing maintenance. All access to archived data is protected by SSL encryption and adherence to the US government's Advanced Encryption Standard ensures that data is not accessible in clear text.

"While our award-winning spam-fighting technology continues to protect email servers and networks from email threats, these same infrastructures are facing a growing storage problem that is straining expensive hardware and adding significant administrative costs," Red Condor chief executive officer Thomas Steding said in a statement. "In addition to these storage challenges, companies are also being hit with compliance requirements from the SEC, NASD, HIPAA, Sarbanes-Oxley, and other industry groups, as well as the need to protect themselves in the event of legal discovery requests."

Data is stored online and immediately accessible for comprehensive searches through secure administrator and end-user dashboards. Archive users will be able to search, retrieve and export messages by keyword, sender, recipient, data range and other criteria, as well as add comments, tag keywords and flag for review. With Red Condor Archive, companies can enforce corporate policy while protecting themselves and their employees by auditing employee email for harassment, improper disclosure, confidentiality leaks and other risks.

"Message archiving is no longer something nice to have, it is now business critical," Steding continued. "With Red Condor Archive, we are bringing to message archiving the same dedication that helped make our email filtering so effective and successful. Red Condor provides an affordable solution that protects and archives business communications, allowing organizations and their IT staffs to remain focused on their core operations."

Jim Addlesberger, President of NavigateStorage, said that Red Condor is taking all the work and costs out of protecting email and of being compliant. Jim said "a user can start out with as few as five mail boxes and grow up to 5,000 mail boxes. Costs he said for 100 mail boxes is $4000 a year. No software or hardware is required."

Thin provisioning brings utilization and capacity benefits to data storage, but with a caveat

NavigateStorage specializes in storage and has since 1999. We found this article of interest and wanted to share it with you from Search Storage October, 2009.

Introducing thin provisioning technology into existing and new enterprise data storage environments can bring dramatic storage recovery rates and bottom-line savings. The technology works in disparate environments with a wide range of capacity and application needs, and can help many administrators solve the ongoing dilemma of provisioning enough storage to each application so it can run smoothly while still retaining enough storage to introduce new applications and deal with unexpected growth. Major vendors have been slow to offer thin provisioning technology, however, perhaps because they were reluctant to reduce the amount of capacity (and products) their customers must buy.
