Industry’s first 3Gb/s Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) expander
This is ideal for today’s data centers and storage subsystems, leveraging existing SCSI infrastructure for investment protection and ease of migration and implementation.
The expanders comply with the SAS standard which includes the proven SCSI command set, while allowing for point-to-point connection, increased device bandwidth, higher availability with dual-ported drives, and enhanced reliability when compared to parallel SCSI. In addition, SAS leverages an electrical and physical connection interface that is compatible with SATA technology. This interface compatibility allows for greater customer choice in drive connection, including the 2.5" hard disk drive small form factor.

NavigateStorage Announces Enterprise EMail Professional
MessageSolution Enterprise Email Archive Professional Edition is a feature-rich on-site email archiving solution for Microsoft Exchange Server and IBM Lotus Notes Domino Server designed to help organizations beat the economic downturn by keeping implementation timelines short and deployment costs low.
MessageSolution Enterprise Email Archive Professional Edition provides a more expedient, cost-effective option for organizations that have more Outlook or Lotus Notes users than Outlook Web Access (OWA) or Domino Web Access users.
"Organizations can speed up the archive deployment process by placing a majority of users on MessageSolution Professional Edition and giving heavy Outlook Web Access or Domino Web Access users the Enterprise Suite edition," said MessageSolution Senior Strategic Product Manager Raymond Lee.
Enterprise Email Archive Professional Edition is a streamlined version of MessageSolution Email Archive Enterprise Suite edition, which leads the archiving industry in enterprise-level archive scalability with an implementation of more than 10,000 users on a single archiving server. MessageSolution Enterprise Suite edition provides a web-based search and administration interface, email client integration, Outlook Web Access or Domino Web Access integration, mobile archive access for traveling users and Blackberry users, and an optional unified file archiving solution.
The Professional Edition gives users transparent Outlook and Lotus Notes client integration, along with convenient offline and Blackberry archive access and MessageSolution‟s user-friendly web-based interface.
The Professional Edition also provides policy-based archiving, archiving of encrypted emails, web-based search, in-process de duplication/single instancing, and high-volume compression, along with advanced audit and litigation support functionality.
MessageSolution announced the release of another archiving edition in January, MessageSolution Enterprise Email Archive Compliance Express edition for GroupWise, Exchange, Domino and all major Linux-based email servers. The addition of MessageSolution Professional Edition further expands MessageSolution‟s ability to customize the level of support and functionality required by specific groups of users in an organization.
A strong portfolio of multiple archive editions allows MessageSolution to take an approach to solution definition that is unique in the archiving industry, giving organizations the freedom to „mix and match‟ between MessageSolution archive editions to achieve optimal functionality and support at minimal cost.
"This approach to solution definition is also the most cost-effective," Lee explained. "By letting organizations provide different users with the unique feature sets they need, MessageSolution customers have seen their archiving costs lowered significantly."

Managing IP Addresses with Free Tools
Few people would argue the importance of IP addresses to network operations, but many don't make managing them a priority in their environment, especially in tough economic times.
Recent research from BT showed that more network managers are moving away from spreadsheets and investing in automation and other tools to manage IP addresses. Still many couldn't get an IP address management (IPAM) project pushed through the budget process for various reasons. Some reasons pointed to other projects taking a higher priority and others simply thought their network was too small to justify the investment.
But many working in network operations today believe managing IP addresses is too critical a project to fall victim to budget crunches.
"Many IT folks and shops don’t get that proper IP address management is more than just housekeeping. Although more appropriately thought of as IP address design, how you determine to lay out your address space becomes a major factor in being able to grow and adapt your organization to the changing needs of IT," says Chad Buzzard, director of network operations at Lending Tree in Charlotte, N.C.
Related Content
Buzzard experienced a similar situation last year, with no budget to upgrade his IPAM practices he found another option.
"As the person directly responsible for the IP address allocation within our enterprise I can understand the priority conflict in moving to an automated solution, but the cost of a product should not be a factor for anyone if they take their time to look at the options out there," says Chad Buzzard, director of network operations at Lending Tree in Charlotte, N.C. "Last year we moved from spreadsheets to the open source tool called IPplan."
According to sourceforge.net, IPplan is free, Web-based IPAM software that can help simplify the administration of network IP address space. Available under the GNU General Public License, IPplan includes DNS administration, configuration file management, customizable circuit management and hardware information storage. The application is said to be able to handle a single network or multiple networks and overlapping address space.
For Buzzard, the open source application enables him to make IPAM a priority without paying for it. Using in-house labor and free tools helps keep the IP address space managed according to best practices, which he says will ultimately pay off for his organization.
"We have every IP address in our network integrated into this tool and we perform weekly network scans to find rogue IP addresses that were not documented, as well as to find addresses no longer in use to keep everything up to date," he says. "There was a fair amount of manpower time in that project, but a lot of that comes from our desire to audit every IP address instead of just mapping the spreadsheet in and calling it good."

Storage and SDD's for max performance
NavigateStorage's StoneyFly actually beat Dell to its official announcement of the PS6000 today with its rollout of the Voyager, an active-active midrange IP SAN. Voyager is available with Intel X-25E SSDs, or SAS or SATA drives. It also includes a 10-Gigabit Ethernet option – something that is apparently still on the drawing board at Dell.
It seems like just yesterday – or maybe this morning – that SSDs were considered something for super high performance tier 0 applications. Is anybody using iSCSI for that?
StoneFly product manager Jame Ervin says demand is high for SSD as well as 10-GigE.
“We have customers ready to go with SSD the minute it’s available,” she said. “They’re looking for any performance benefit they can get.”
Contact NavigateStorage for the best prices in town, or just call.
As for 10-gigE, Ervin says it has the greatest appeal among service providers. “Those type of customers seem to have the most interest so far. They seem to be ahead of the game adopting new technologies,” she said.
IDC research analyst Liz Conner doesn’t expect SSD to be a large selling point for iSCSI before 2010, but with iSCSI use growing and budgets shrinking it’s worth taking a look at now.
“I see it popping up more for Fibre Channel SANs, but it will happen with iSCSI,” Conner said. “Most people will go with Fibre Channel for high performance, but with iSCSI offering more high-end features and the way the economy is now, it’s more of an option.”
Conner says 10-gigE is inevitable for iSCSI. “They can say, ‘we’ve got it now, you won’t have to upgrade later,’” she said of StoneFly’s strategy.Trackback URL

Fault Tolerant Maratholn Technologies
Microsoft, Marathon Bring Fault Tolerant Technology to Windows Server 2008 and Hyper-V
Microsoft and Marathon Technologies last week unveiled a partnership and a joint development agreement to bring fault tolerant options to companies running Windows Server 2008 and Hyper-V.
By John Fontana
Mon, January 12, 2009 — Network World — Microsoft and Marathon Technologies last week unveiled a partnership and a joint development agreement to bring fault tolerant options to companies running Windows Server 2008 and Hyper-V.
Microsoft is moving to create a more highly available Windows environment by offering a selection of options to protect business-critical applications. Marathon offers a fault tolerant platform that supports Windows called everRun. The vendor will offer support for Windows Server 2008 before the end of June and for a version of Hyper-V that will ship in a future edition of Windows Server. Microsoft officials would not confirm if it would be the next version after the Windows Server 2008 R2 version, which went into beta last week. Marathon and Microsoft officials said integration with System Center management tools also are in development.
Marathon's everRun has its own management component. Windows Server 2008 includes failover clustering, but Marathon adds a level of fault tolerance that includes options for minimal downtime or none at all. The two companies plan to combine development efforts in building a platform so fault tolerance and high availability can be built on Hyper-V. "That provides the platform element that other partners could [build on]," says Mike Schutz, director of product management for the Windows server division at Microsoft.arathon supports Citrix Xen Hypervisor and the company said once the Hyper-V support ships, everRun will work across both platforms to create a single fault-tolerant environment.
The fault tolerance will come in three levels: the failover clustering shipping in Windows Server 2008; a component level fault tolerance via everRun that protects storage and system components with little or no down time; and an everRun system level setting that ensures availability including memory for applications that require zero downtime.

Norman Virus Control: The Anti-Symantec Approach
Norman Virus Control is simply an anti-virus program that goes back to the basics with solid virus protection without all the added bloatware that most modern antivirus programs are prone to bring with them. It uses a simple interface that is both easy to use and intuitive for people who appreciate less complicated software. The software is compatible with Windows XP and Vista as well as the 64-bit version of both operating systems.
Currently I am running it side by side with Avast antivirus and both run perfectly with each other without conflict. Norman also has a full security suite but I can't use it because I am running a 64-bit operating system. The antivirus, however, runs on any Windows XP or Vista system 64 or 32 bit.Installation and updatesInstallation is a breeze. You can install from the CD or download the program from the companie's web site.
You install the program by launching setup.exe or just insert the CD. During the installation you have the option of installing the program where you like but it is probably best to install it to the default location. After the installation is finished you will want to update the program to get the latest protection from the newest viruses out there. You'll notice a new icon in the program tray at the bottom right of the screen. It is a little blue square with a white "N" in it. Right click and choose "Internet Update" and the program will download and update the latest protection. One thing that I really like about this program is that it doesn't nag you every day to download updates or announce with an annoyingly friendly voice that "You're antivirus program has just been updated" like others do. The program quietly does what it is supposed to do and that is to protect my computer from viruses. SchedulingYou can set the program to update at any time you set over the internet.
If you use dial-up access you can have the program automatically dial-up and hang up when it is done. You can schedule the program to run at any time as well. The Norman Antivirus interface is very easy to familiarize yourself with quickly and changing settings takes seconds. The program can be set to run hidden until a virus is found of cleaning fails to keep it out of your way. The software is very non-intrusive. It's nice to have an antivirus program that doesn't draw attention to itself unless there is a reason for it.
Luckily, I have not had any virus attacks since I installed it but I have the program running hidden so I wouldn't know unless it couldn't clean them anyway. The program also installs a "scan for virus" option to your drop down menus. You can right click on a file and choose "scan for virus" to launch the virus scanner. The program works pretty much the same way as other antivirus programs where you can choose which drive to scan or just scan a folder or file if you like.ConclusionNorman Antivirus is a good solid antivirus program that does it job and does it quietly. It is really nice to have an antivirus that doesn't announce everything it does; I mean I have it running in the background for a reason. If you need a good antivirus and are tired of the big bad yellow box, try this one.

PandaLabs detects a malicious program used to create fake YouTube pages for infecting users
The infection method is as follows: cyber-crooks send an email containing a video with supposedly sensational content (erotic images, death of a celebrity, etc.) and encourage users to click a link to watch the video. This is known as social engineering.
Once they reach the fake page, which is very similar to the actual YouTube site (see image: http://www.flickr.com/photos/panda_security/2840011688/), the user will see an error message informing that they can’t watch the video as a certain component is missing (a codec, an Adobe Flash update, etc.) and prompting them to download it. However, on doing it, they will actually be allowing malware onto their computers.
YTFakeCreator lets cyber-criminals create these fake YouTube pages very easily. They can enter the text for the error message displayed by the web page; define how long it takes the message to appear; enter the link to the infected file downloaded onto the victim’s computer; and create a false profile similar to those in YouTube to pretend the video has been uploaded by a real user. All this with just a single program (image: http://www.flickr.com/photos/panda_security/2839993538/).
The criminal can choose the type of malicious code to be distributed from these fake pages: viruses, worms, adware, Trojans, etc. “This type of program has led to the increased use of this technique to infect users. The tools made available to cyber-criminals nowadays force users to take every precaution to avoid falling victim to these attacks”, explains Luis Corrons, technical director of PandaLabs. “Also, the fact that the pages used by criminals are very difficult to distinguish from the legitimate pages helps ensure that a growing number of users are infected”.

FalconStor VTL really got it right
FalconStor VTL Enterprise Edition (they have great solutions for SMB and Virtual environments too) provides large organizations with high-performance enterprise-level disk-based data protection to meet backup demands, simplify tape management, and enhance tape security. It is integrated with FalconStor Single Instance Repository (SIR) to deliver post-process global deduplication without impacting the backup window. With SIR, only unique data blocks are replicated to the remote site, slashing network traffic over 95%. Offering multi-node scalability, FalconStor VTL emulates vast arrays of tape libraries, drives, and cartridges, ensuring complete backup transparency. By enabling companies to keep backup data on disk, FalconStor VTL significantly improves the speed and dependability of recovery.
