The Continuum-Datto BDR Partnership: Questions Answered

When Continuum (formerly Zenith RMM) yesterday announced a BDR (backup and disaster recovery) storage partnership with Datto, nearly 1,000 managed services providers (MSPs) and VARs signed up to gain early access to the platform, according to Continuum CEO Michael George. Still, MSPmentor raised five questions about the Continuum-Datto relationship and its potential implications for MSPs. George and his management team late last night spoke with MSPmentor and offered deeper insights. Here’s the update. Among the key takeaways: Continuum isn’t just getting into the BDR market, the company “wants to dominate it,” said George.

First, a little background: Summit Partners acquired Zenith RMM (now Continuum) in September 2011 from Zenith Infotech. The new Continuum Vault solution, launching in partnership with Datto, essentially positions Continuum to compete against Zenith Infotech in the BDR storage market. MSPmentor’s Question: Can Continuum truly compete against its former owner, Zenith Infotech, especially when Zenith Infotech owns a minority stake in Continuum and Zenith Infotech CEO Akash Saraf sits on Continuum’s board?

Continuum’s Perspective: George said there’s nothing stopping Continuum from competing against Zenith Infotech because “we were the buyer and they were the seller. It would be pretty unique for a buyer to be restricted from doing new things [i.e., entering new markets." When companies are purchased and sold, he added, "the seller is usually very restricted but the buyer is usually rarely restricted."

MSPmentor's Question: Will Saraf remain on Continuum's board now that Continuum Vault essentially competes with Saraf's primary company, Zenith Infotech?

Continuum's Perspective: George said Saraf remains on Continuum's board and that his presence doesn't impact Continuum's business. "It is not a situation in any way impares or impedes our ability to do business and make decisions," said George. "Our significant owner is Summit Partners. We [Summit and the Continuum insiders] as a management team own more than 85 percent of the business. The fact that he’s on the board the board is a non-factor. We don’t lose sleep about it.” If in the future Saraf’s presence does become an issue, Continuum will explore the situation at that time, he said.

MSPmentor’s Question: Will Zenith Infotech maintain its minority stake in Continuum now that Continuum Vault essentially competes with Zenith Infotech?

Continuum’s Perspective: “It’s a fair question to ask,” said George. “But we’ve had no issues related to that.” George reiterated the fact that Zenith Infotech has only a small stake in Continuum. Also of note: Zenith Infotech may not be able to sell its stake in Continuum in order to adhere to an alleged court ruling in India, where Zenith Infotech is currently locked in a dispute with bondholders over a debt payment default. “Having Zenith Infotech sell their remaining stake on Continuum might require [Zenith Infotech] plaintiff approval. That’s an area at the moment we don’t care about; we only care about building our business and serving our partners.”

Note: MSPmentor does not know if Zenith Infotech would consider selling its minority stake in Continuum. I’ve reach out to Zenith Infotech for comment.

MSPmentor’s Question: Is the Continuum-Datto relationship exclusive or will Continuum work with additional BDR companies and storage companies?

Continuum’s Perspective: George confirmed that “there are some exclusive components” to the Continuum-Datto relationship. To summarize his thoughts, it’s safe to say the Continuum Vault solution involves and exclusive partnership between Continuum and Datto. Also, Datto has agreed to put a Continuum RMM (remote monitoring and management) agent on every device they ship. (MSPs can manually switch the Datto devices to alternative RMM agents if they so choose.)

“We’re a strong believer in business relationships that have real commitments to one another. We look for unique advantages from any strategic partnership and we want to offer a great strategic advantage to our partners who are willing to make big commitments to us.”

Still, George added, Continuum’s RMM platform will remain open to integrate with additional third-party BDR solutions; the Continuum Vault solution is where the Continuum-Datto exclusive deal essentially emerges.

MSPmentor: Why is Continuum getting into the BDR market?

Continuum’s perspective: “Candidly, we thought we would draft off of Zenith Infotech’s success in the BDR space,” said George. “Right up until the news about their [bond] default, Zenith Infotech was growing successfully so it was a natural place for us to feel comfortable drafting behind. But their news [the bond default] from a market perspective changed everything.”

George sees the BDR market as a “sharp edge of the sword” that allows MSPs to slice their way into the managed services market and stir even more demand for remote monitoring and management. “Once we decided we needed to address the shart edge of the sword we knew we would want to get into the market and not just be in it. We wanted to win and dominate it.” Hence, the Datto relationship and launch of Continuum Vault, George said.

Next Moves

George and the Continuum management team are expected to be in Chicago today, meeting with roughly a dozen MSPs “to listen, rather than talk,” he said.

During our conversation last night, it became clear that Continuum is running a marathon at a sprinter’s pace. Think of it this way: Summit Partners acquired Zenith RMM (now Continuum) in September. Since that time, George and his management team have completely rebranded the company, held dozens of MSP-centric meetings across the country, and met with most of the major BDR, RMM and PSA software providers.

Some skeptics wonder if Continuum can maintain this rapid pace — pushing into new markets even as Continuum strives to strengthen its core RMM and NOC (network operations center) services. We’ll be watching.

We are getting close to the end of this year's fall, so we thought this would be a good time to summarize our most important news.

High disk prices = lower disk TCO

Industry watchers expect disk prices to be kept artificially high through 2012. With this action, disk manufacturers want to make up for the losses they have suffered from the recent flood in Thailand, which destroyed much of the manufacturing plants.

For Amplidata this situation perfectly illustrates the need to optimize big data storage infrastructures: typical cloud storage systems that store 3 copies of data to ensure data availability are in normal times far too expensive in terms of raw capacity that is required. These systems typically need 300% of raw disk storage capacity compared to the actual volume data that needs to be stored. As Amplidata does not copy data – but uses very smart erasure coding technology – it only requires about 60% overhead to provider even higher availability.

For Amplidata’s CEO Wim De Wispelaere, companies should not see this event as a problem for their storage budget as newer technologies such as Amplidata BitSpread still allow to reduce the storage TCO drastically. “Even if disk prices are 80% more expensive now, we can still reduce your 2012 overall storage TCO compared to the 2011 numbers.”

Flooding in Thailand Impact on Disk Drives

Due to flooding in Thailand, predicts IDC

Widespread flooding is bringing unprecedented devastation to the people and economy of Thailand. With operations disrupted at more than a dozen HDD factories, damage to the HDD industry is significant.

And this will have a direct impact on worldwide PC shipments through the first half of 2012, according to a new International Data Corporation report.

In the first half of 2011, Thailand accounted for 40-45% of worldwide HDD production. As of early November, nearly half of this capacity was directly impacted by the flooding. In addition to assembly and component facilities being inundated with water, the industry faces work stoppages due to poor access and power outages. The full extent of the damage to HDD industry factories will not be known until the floodwaters recede, although it's already clear that there will be HDD supply shortages into the first quarter of 2012.

The severity of HDD shortages in the coming months largely depends on the industry's ability to recover lost production capacity in Thailand. While IDC believes HDD industry participants will recover and restore HDD production capacity relatively quickly, HDD supply will remain constrained for an extended period of time.

As a result, PC vendors should plan
for and expect the following:

Significant HDD shortages by mid-November 2011 that will continue into 1Q 2012.
A large part of PC production for Q4 2011 shipment has already taken place or can be completed with existing HDD inventories, limiting the impact on Q4 PC shipments to less than 10%. But in a worst-case scenario, total PC shipments could be depressed by more than 20% in Q1 2012 vs. previous forecasts as a result of the HDD shortage.
Higher HDD prices as demand exceeds supply and manufacturers face increased costs for components, expedited shipments, and shifting of production to new locations.
The HDD industry begins to recover in 1Q 2012, and HDD pricing stabilizes by June, with the industry running close to normal in the second half of 2012.
Opportunities for larger PC vendors to capture enterprise accounts from smaller competitors and accelerate industry consolidation, particularly in faster growth markets.

Why you should rethink SAS over SATA

SASdrives are dual ported, which means that they can be controlled by 2 controlersat the same time, and there are 2 paths to the data. And not only are there 2paths but you can send and receive data at the same time on both paths, this iscalled called Full Duplex.

SATAdrives are single ported and can only be controlled by 1 controller.To have 2data paths to the SATA drive you need a Mux board or port multiplier. Even thenthe data can only be sent in one direction at a time, and only 1 of the 2 portscan be used at any given time, and then the data can only flow in onedirectionat a time.

SASuses Tagged Command Queuing(TCQ) is a technology that allows sendingmultiple read and write requests to a hard drive simultaneously.

SATAuses Native Command Queuing, (NCQ) is a technology designed to increaseperformance of SATA hard disks. It can do this under certain situations byallowing the individual hard disk to internally optimize the order in which itexecutes the read and write requests it recieved. However the current (as of2004) technology actually slows down hard drive access in certain applications,like game and sequential read and writes, because of the added latency inducedby NCQ logic.

Backup makes sense

One would be hard pressed these days to find an IT executive who believes his or her backup process is healthy. In fact, most would probably say the opposite: that their backup processes are broken. Organizations know this and yet they feel unable to respond since budget freezes, staff reductions and new internal and external requirements make fixing the problem seem impossible. This perception, however, is false. IT can heal backup under current circumstances.

Five considerations for better backup

Fixing backup is not a simple matter, nor should it be presented as such. However, there are five considerations we can examine when discussing the opportunity to improve the backup situation plaguing data centers.

1. Determine the biggest pain points you need to solve.

Most IT organizations need some immediate relief from current backup pain, including day-to-day tactical problems such as failed backups and recoveries. They also need to meet heightened recovery expectations with fewer resources; that is, recover data when and where needed to meet demanding service level agreements (SLAs). Additional goals will likely include gaining adaptability, flexibility and scalability, as well as the ability to respond to constantly changing demands without disruptive changes to the backup infrastructure. This might also be an opportune moment to make sure whatever changes you make will support the test and development environments that require multiple copies of production data. With shrinking application development windows, access to near-real time copies of production data for testing is important.

2. Move backup to disk.

Backup to tape for disaster recovery (DR) purposes is costly, time consuming and ineffective when time-to-recovery is the primary measure of effectiveness. The trap that organizations must be careful not to fall into is assuming that they can solve such a problem using outdated tape methodologies. Backup and recovery may be the immediate pain points that companies seek to address, but backup and recovery problems reflect the new challenges that organizations face when optimizing existing backup infrastructures for DR.

Disk is the lynchpin to redesigning a corporation’s backup infrastructure. It solves existing backup and recovery problems while giving organizations new ways to use the backup data that were not available when data was stored to tape. First, companies must look to implement a disk-based storage system as a backup target. This includes disk targets such as networked attached storage (NAS) or virtual tape libraries (VTLs), as well as other advanced forms of disk-based data protection such deduplication, WAN optimized replication and continuous data protection (CDP) using advanced snapshot technology.

Disk consistently increases backup and recovery success rates to 99 percent or more while reducing the time associated with managing the process, improving performance and reliability over tape. Technological introductions like deduplication, high capacity, low-cost SATA drives and WAN optimized replication further add to disk’s appeal by making it as affordable and as functional as tape.

3. Evaluate what VTLs can offer your backup redesign strategy.

Enterprise companies have a multitude of options available to them when it comes to redesigning their backup infrastructures. Choosing a disk-based storage system is the first step in the backup redesign, providing faster and more reliable backup and recovery than tape. However, expanding beyond the basic functionality of backup and recovery to receive the advanced data protection benefits of deduplication, optimized replication or continuous data protection brings with it a wide range of options. The difficulty arises in knowing which disk-based option is the best starting point for an organization.
Prioritizing VTL with deduplication over other disk-based deduplication approaches makes the most sense for organizations that possess high performance SAN-attached applications that use tape as their primary backup targets.

There are numerous advantages that a VTL yields in these situations. For example, only a VTL can emulate physical tape libraries and tape drives that the backup software and existing backup processes are already accustomed to seeing, whereas a NAS solution can only present a file share to the backup software. Since a VTL can emulate any number of tape and tape drives, a VTL interface can be presented and discovered by the backup software with minimal setup or changes to the existing backup software or backup process and without the need to purchase additional software licenses. For organizations with multiple SAN-based backup servers and many jobs, a VTL can offer a non-disruptive solution, significantly improving backup and recovery performance while minimizing IT investments and time-changing backup processes.

The backup software will still recognize the VTL as a physical tape drive, so if the backup software is doing backup multiplexing, it will continue to work. With a VTL, organizations can continue to leave their currently scheduled backup jobs with multiplexing in place once the VTL replaces the physical tape library. Those with FC SANs can also take advantage of an advanced backup software feature known as the “shared storage option.” Available from many enterprise backup software solutions, this option provides backup clients direct access to a tape drive. Using this feature, a backup client can send data directly to the backup target as opposed to the backup first sending the data to a media server. This option is only available with VTLs, not NAS.
VTLs can also provide direct copy to tape and tape management functionality, eliminating disruption of the backup production environment or network for creating physical tape. This is a particularly important feature if an organization wants to create physical tape simultaneous to writing capacity optimized (deduplicated) data to disk. This is also important for organizations that want to write to physical tape at their DR sites without having to install and license additional copies of each backup application at the DR location.

4. Work with the budget you have. IT budgets are for the most part staying flat or even declining. Meanwhile, data growth continues, so backup loads are only increasing. Individual business units want more data protection choices, not fewer. And IT is asked to do ever more, but without introducing new risks to the organization. Optimizing disk-based backup with data deduplication is the answer to many of these data protection problems because it increases backup speeds and success rates while keeping backup data stores under control.

5. Consider the realities of the landscape, and act. Year-over-year storage growth continues unabated. By the end of this decade, according to IDC, our digital universe will be 44 times larger than it is now, with approximately 35 zettabytes of virtual data needing management by 2020. With that expanded data store comes an increased need for reliable business continuity and DR. These are now requirements, not luxuries. Additionally, server virtualization is changing the landscape of corporate data centers and the needs for change to backup and recovery methodologies. Finally, pressures from regulatory corridors are forcing IT and legal to work together more closely to coordinate electronic discovery and more stringent service level agreements (SLAs).
Within the next couple of years, more than 30 percent of organizations will have replaced existing backup methodologies, according to recent research surveys. The companies undertaking those initiatives face the same set of circumstances as the rest of the market. They are just as affected by the persistent tough economic climate in which budget freezes and IT staffing cutbacks are now part of the corporate landscape. Nevertheless, these conditions are actually hastening – not slowing – the desire of companies to redesign their backup infrastructures. They recognize they can realize substantial returns on investment using new backup infrastructures through more efficient hardware, power savings and staff utilization. And when they take into account the core considerations regarding better backup, they find that fixing their processes is both necessary and possible.

The channel program will authorize U.S. Huawei partners to sell Huawei's Ethernet switches, routers and video telepresence products. Huawei's overall product portfolio goes far further and wider, but Huawei representatives told CRN it will be those three product lines for now.

Consider those initial offerings "phase one" of the program, Lu said.
